With RealPlayer v5, I get 'Cannot open audio device' although the
RealPlayer v3 for FreeBSD works fine.

Grrr... Anyone solved this problem running the RealPlayer v5 for
linux? There are a few posts over the last year describing the same
or similar problem, but no conclusive solutions.

Just the facts:
- SB AWE64
- Voxware snd drivers
- running up-to-date FBSD stable
- using up-to-date linux_lib 2.4
- LD_LIBRARY_PATH set for rvplayer v5
- raplayer v3 and other audio apps (e.g. amp) work fine
- world writable /dev/audio
- RealPlayer, Version 5.0.0.45

More obscure facts:

- If I open the welcome.ra file from the raplayer v3 distribution I
get the 'Cannot open audio device'.

- If I open the welcome.rm (an audio/video stream) then the player
sort of hangs, the video is black, there is a long pause, then the
progress meter moves to the end and announces that it's done.
I can manually slide the slider and I can see indivual video frames,
but no audio or video.

- If I install the OSS drivers and try running rvplayer v5, then my
system freezes up completely. No panic, just dead! Reproducible. Is
this a clue?

- Running a P166 w/ 96MB
