An IRC Server on its own is not a very big resource user, but the more and more users you add on, the more and more resources are needed. An IRC Server is fairly secured against system exploit, bearing in mind you are using a good well coded ircd like Unreal, Bahamut, Dreamforge, or one of th= e many others.=20 The biggest things I have found in my experience running irc servers is tha= t ram and CPU usage are the first casulities of a busy IRC Server. Twenty users, will easily run on a small 486 DX2 with a fair amount of memory. (providing the system is not running many other processes). As Christopher Schulte stated already, FreeBSD is an ideal platform for running an IRCD, most IRC Server networks are running FreeBSD, and most IRCD's are developed on FreeBSD. As for Bandwidth usage, a DSL connection is easily able to run 20 users, a dial-up account is able to handle about 4 connections, with few problems. Redundecy, would be best done, with a spare, unused machine, with a redundent DNS entry to switch to the secondary server. Like wise, if you add services, in the conf file, you can assign the secondary server to the conf file. Hope this helps. I'm looking=20 at what sort of System/Connection requirements we might need. We are looking at setting up a small network, 2-3 computers to support 15-20 users= . We'd like to have a couple servers for redundency, and to load balance. Now questions are: 1) what would be some good minimum system specs? 2) what is network overhead going to be? Any recommended connection for ou= r small user base.=20 3) should this be run in a jailed environment (I am guessing so) Any other hints, tips, ideas, or web resources would be greatly appreciated= .
