In looking over responses to the above, I confess that I am surprised.

It never occurred to me that the point brought up would be much of an
issue, since I tend to run local nameservers.  (At home I run a pair of
'em, as a split-horizon nameserver pair.  And I only have 2 machines
running presently.)

But as long as it doesn't break anything for those of us who prefer to
ignore /etc/hosts, I have no problem with it.
