What does "xvinfo" tell you? Do you have YUY2 and YV12 output

I haven't tried "-vo gl", but "-vo xv" behaves the same for some of the
movies (not all) I have here. There seems to be a bug somewhere in
XFree86 (I've 4.1.0).
