Would the following quote from "Running a Perfect Internet Site with Linux" by 
Dee-Ann LeBlanc be applicable?

"If you want to move up to the next step faster in connections (ISDN, which is 
discussed in a moment), but it is far too expensive, another alternative may be to 
use two 56K modems and two standard phone lines. Using a technique called EQL 
load balancing, you can then use the two phone lines together to double your 
bandwidth ( if your service provider supports this)."
