It depends what you want to build. There are some parts you can build on their own and not have to worry too much about dependencies. But it depends on what has changed since your last cvsup. If you want to update to the most recent snapshot of stable, you really should use cvsup to do so. Check the handbook for instructions on it as well as how to use cvsup and what needs to be done in order to track STABLE. Its a fairly easy process, but you must deal with the few caveats.
