I have this problem too, and I manually added
case "$1" in
*stop)
/bin/pkill -9 mpd
esac
into /usr/local/etc/rc.d/musicpd to stop it.
It seems like there's some problem about locking in mpd.
This problem appeared after I updated mpd I think.
I'm using musicpd-0.14.1.
