I've ran freeBSD 4.2 on a Compaq Proliant 1500 (with a smart-2p scsi controller) and it worked amazingly well. This really gave me a lot more respect for freebsd. For some reason i found that the freebsd cd wouldn't boot on my machine, yet other cds would, so all you need to do is set up the boot floppies, chuck the cd in the drive and it will boot from the floppies then recognise the cd. The doco should be on the cd under floppies/README.TXT or check out the hand book at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install.html Since it is a SCSI system, you might have a bit of a problem if you haven't configured the array properly with logical drives and the raid stuff (raid is great on these) using compaq's utility which you can download from http://www.compaq.com/smartstart.html and boot from that cd. At least i think that was it, but it could be diffferent because you machine is newer. But once you have that going it works amazingly well! I was so impressed. I had to set up this server for a class at highschool, and when Win2k wouldn't recognise the scsi stuff, i switched to freebsd, which is what i wanted to do all along. It worked like a dream! And i really impressed (and confused) everyone. Once i figured all of that out i was happy, but it took a while to figure out. I hope this helps you.
