Before we put big scary warnings there, can you try building out the hard 
drive on another machine, and then moving it into your problematic one?

Giving us a dmesg or uname would be helpful.  [ You might also try considering 
trying a NetBoot/PXE install, or blowing $15 on a floppy drive.  Heck, they 
even make USB floppy drives nowadays. ]
