You want to try gentoo Linux, I've just tried installing that about 7 times in a row and always end up failing, and it doesn't have any sort of automatic installer. I never have a problem with FreeBSD, in fact today just for fun I did an ftp install because I've never done one before ( and I had the bandwidth to spare, plus a box that obviously refused to let me put Linux on it). I'd actually be wondering what your hardware is, especially considering the long probe?
