I would appriciate any suggestions. Ugh. You should really find a way to back up before doing this if there is information you don't want to loose on the disk. There is always the potential for some sort of distaster. You can find information on FIPS at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/install.html, or the FIPS.DOC file in the source distribution in ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/tools/src or something like that (ftp.freebsd.org isn't responding at the moment so I can't check).
