Adduser does things in a very oldschool way and has race conditions when
handling multiple users.  I'm not sure if its crypt salt will force DES hashes
or not.  

I wrote a replacement script, "enteruser" which calls pw to create users, and
is altigether safer to hack on to suit your own purposes.  You can read about
