https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=241635 Bug ID: 241635 Summary: tr(1) produces ridiculous error message Product: Base System Version: 12.0-RELEASE Hardware: Any OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Some People Priority: --- Component: bin Assignee: bugs@FreeBSD.org Reporter: rfg-freebsd@tristatelogic.com The tr(1) command can sometimes produce the following error message: tr: Illegal byte sequence Perhaps rms is not the best person to be quoting anymore thes days, but I clearly remember, back in the day, he used to always poke fun at this kind of silly error message. "Illegal" ??? Will I be taken to jail now? Gosh I hope not. If I am going to be busted and taken to jail, I would prefer that it be for some REALLY henious crime... not for merely passing an "illegal" byte sequence into the tr utility. Somebody should fix the message so that it ain't so silly. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
