Is the screen blanked by a screen saver?  Which one?
Or, is it APM BIOS that blanks the display?  Is the apm(4) driver
included in your kernel?

Does this mean that you don't run xdm, or you are put in a text vty
even though you are running xdm?

Do the keyboard LEDs all right?  Hit CapsLock, ScrollLock, NumLock
to see if LESs are updated as they should.

Can you switch to ttyv0 (hit Alt-F1)?  There may be something there.
If you ping this box from another before you unblank the screen,
does it respond?
