I don't care about religion - the important thing is that <delete-previous-character> is easily configured for both warring factions. Ask the man on the street - I'll bet 99.99% of persons who use a keyboard will reach for the key that says "Backspace" when they make a one-key typo, and not go hunting for "Delete". I use a Win32 desktop system to talk to all the systems where I work, and don't want to context switch to Del-for-backspace if I happen to be in a certain window.
