The manual page for mt goes out of it's way to say that the positioning
data that it reports is not definitive. Also your mt command did not
specify a -f option. I suspect that it performed the action using the
default device and so rewinded it before reporting.
If you run
mt -f /dev/nrsa0 status
is the report the same?
