You could try using ghostscript to convert to ppm, then use ppmtogif (from
netpbm), possibly using ppmquant to drop the colors below 256.  I suppose
png isn't an option (yet).

Actually, since you have 'xv', and that reads p[bgp]m, you really don't need
netpbm.
