I don't think that's the problem, the machine has 1 gb of memory, and 
the java process consumes about 500mb, of which 186mb is resident:

Mem: 477M Active, 243M Inact, 150M Wired, 9024K Cache, 112M Buf, 125M 
Free
Swap: 1000M Total, 46M Used, 954M Free, 4% Inuse

   PID USERNAME PRI NICE  SIZE    RES STATE    TIME   WCPU    CPU COMMAND
64549 tomcat     2   0   577M   186M RUN      2:14 57.23% 57.23% java
   222 solid      2   0   104M 19144K select   6:54  3.37%  3.37% solid

(solid is the database process)

As you can see there is still 125mb of memory left.
