I asked the same question on questions a day ago and for FreeBSD 4, Dan Nelson provided some patches for iostat to add the read/write stats: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2004-April/043644.html gstat does work for FreeBSD 5 but unfortunately it doesn't print simple text output that can be used to collect long term stats via a script...
