I asked the same question on questions a day ago and for FreeBSD 4,
Dan Nelson provided some patches for iostat to add the read/write stats:

gstat does work for FreeBSD 5 but unfortunately it doesn't print
simple text output that can be used to collect long term stats via a
script...
