FWIW, I used to have a Dell i7500 with a CD-RW, and it worked just fine. You can get some of these messages if the media is bad or the speed is too high, though. Only some brands of CD-R and CD-RW would ever work properly for me; you might want to try getting few samples of different brands and see what happens.
