it the first time i install freebsd, so, i may be wrong in this bug report when trying to install freebsd 2.2.5 on a PC whith 2 disks (one 424Mo and one 3Go) IDE. i wanted to use a 180Mo partition on the first disk for / and a 1Go partition on the second. i've tried many times to use the 1Go partition for sub partitionning, but i always got the message "cannot create partition, too big ?" or some thing like that. after 3 or 4 try, i proceed anyway... it end up in a file system is full... i restart again the installation (now the partition have been written to disk) and now i can do what i want whith the 1G0 parition. i must say that other partition were alreday used for linux. -> in conclusion, it seems that the sub partition program bug when big partition hav'nt already been used by freebsd... if i'm wrong or it's a weel known bug, don't loose your time answering this mail!
