If I set max_string *above* there, though, I get the same numbers. I'm digging into teTeX, but I can't find a limit that's producing this. I'll dig some more, but I'm still hoping a TeX expert (I've been using it for 15 years, but I don't know much about configuring it) will say something more useful. Be well.
