I have worked on this over the last weekend and made an alpha-quality
patch.  Unfortunately this patch was not intended to be a general
backward-compatible one, but if you have a working ELF system it will do
what you want.

Would you -- and others who live with an Elf :-) -- like to try it?  I
don't want this work to be another waste-of-time...
