Mr. Lynch,
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with BSD. I find it to be superior to Linux and Windows in just about every conceivable way, save hardware support. Let me try to go through your list, and see if I can clear a few things up.

>>>
A few lessons:
1. Installed means installed - not downloaded, not archived, installed.

I don't understand the complaint? I found the FreeBSD installer to be one of the most straightforward, easy to use installers I've ever seen. You can install with nothing more than two floppy disks and a working Internet connection. Except for the lack of graphics, which is a recent add-on to Linux, it is a lot more advanced.

2. Copy and paste are viable concepts in any OS.

Sure, this works the same as in Linux. You use the mouse (if you have a mouse daemon loaded) in the exact same way - otherwise, it is application specific.

3. RPM is not installed and also mentioned nowhere in "The Complete
FreeBSD". A little professional jealousy?

FreeBSD has a *much* more powerful system called pkg_add. Instead of one tool, there are several - pkg_add, pkg_delete, pkg_info, etc. There is a complete list of human readable package info in /var/db/pkg. It is simpler, and more powerful than RPM in just about every possible way. If you still want RPM's, you can always install it - but I find I don't require RPM at all. On the rare occasion I need an RPM, I temporarily compile it - and then delete it.

4. If you can't support what you sell, and you obviously can't, go wash
dishes and do something constructive.

It's a free operating system. Nevertheless, you have options. There is BSDi, which sells BSD/OS and provides commercial support - much like many of the commercial Linux vendors. If you don't want to pay, I have found these mailing lists to be very helpful. Running any free OS requires a bit more work, though. You are expected to at least research the problem.

5. I don't know anyone at FreeBSD and for that I am truly grateful.

That is a shame, and your loss. I have corresponded with a number of folks responsible for FreeBSD components, such as Mr. Lehey - who wrote the vinum volume manager among other things. They have always been most helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. Despite the fact that this is a free OS, they are nevertheless quite professional.

6. Netscape has just informed me that someone is running on my desktop, that
has never happened with ny other system.

I don't understand this at all. Please clarify this statement, if you don't mind.

In total rage,

Calm down, please. Remember, there are plenty of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty as the real thing... ;)
