newpcm again assigns the first pcm device to pcm0, the second to pcm1,
and so on. Correct your symlinks (/dev/audio or /dev/dsp) to
/dev/audio0 or /dev/dsp0.

It would be good to mention it in LINT or somewhere appropriate.
