Well, it's time for me to embark on my first FBSD upgrade. I have
2.1 installed off the CD and from what I've read it looks like I want
to run
sup /usr/share/examples/sup/stable-supfile
to download a new src tree (yea, I have the bandwidth). Then I
should tar up /etc and back-up onto another machine. What about
/var/mail, home and /usr/local/etc (where I have named and ftpd
stuff) -- I've seen no mention of others backing up stuff besides
/etc -- is it cause they like living dangerously, just have'nt
mentioned it or is it really untouched by the upgrade process?
What exactly do you do after running sup?
It looks like there is also an Upgrade item in /sysinstall but it
requires being booted from a floppy. Is this a preferable method to
pursue?
If I'm seeming a little confused, it's cause I am. Anybody want to
offer me their preferred method of upgrading?
My Specs:
pentium 133 - 32 mb - 2940 SCSI, 3c509 ethernet - connor 1 gig
SCSI hd, stealth 64 (but I hardly use my Xfree
installation, I just telnet into it for most things)
~340 mb free in /usr
T1 connected
an unused 100 mb DOS partition
