I am from a similar background to you, and I run FreeBSD on an 
Alpha.  Free* and Open* are similar in performance, with Open* being 
concerned with security of the base system.  Net BSD is a little different 
to get used to, but for your system and situation, I would definately 
suggest FreeBSD.
