The thread had evolved a bit further on the multimedia list. That is where I stated I initialy did not use the mixer script. As to the initial problem: forgive me being extremely stubborn. In my ignorance I though not having any references to the mixer script in my rc.conf meant I was not using it. I looked over a line in the defaults though... Setting the suggested 'mixer_enable="NO"' in /etc/rc.conf *does* make the hints work. Thanks to everybody, - Jouke
