I'll agree with the former, but disagree with the latter. Acroread4 is working fine on my new box using linux_base-7.1, no core dumps. (I ignored the strip error, since it's really not a necessary step for full functionality.) I never tried acroread5, since the port couldn't find a copy of the binaries anywhere when I tried it.
