You need to make sure it stays in ASCII (UNIX format) when you download this patch and move. Maybe, you can try do this: jfa# perl -i -pne 's/\r\n/\n/g' /usr/ports/x11-wm/metacity/files/patch-expocity Then try it again to see if it will help. If not, then I can gzip the patch and send it to you in private.
