I'm at a dead on.

I'm trying to assign a variable

MT='/usr/bin/mt -f /dev/nrsa0'

in a shell script. The trouble is that the assignment isn't made and
the script writes to stdout/err

./l0dump.sh: /dev/nrsa0: permission denied

where l0dump.sh is the name of the script.

Why would this assignment fail? I am running this as root. root
definately has write access the /dev/nrsa0. This is really maddening.

Any pointers?
