I ran mergemaster before my experiments, but I checked both my old and new make.conf and there's no setting relevant to INSTALL in either. Maybe I changed *something* that was wrong during mergemaster, but I was looking out for anything that was relevant to my problem, and I didn't see anything. It's all quite odd, as far as I'm concerned.
