Thanks...no, I was building a modified GENERIC.  The problem seems to be
with "make depend".  the config program tells you to run it, but if you
do, you get the bloated kernel.  I skipped it, and now the kernel's down
to a relatively svelt 1.7MB.

So much for following directions! :-/
