In the meantime, if I managed to get over the hang accidentally, - sometimes I just waited long enough or switched the beast off/on at the right time - the scanner seems to work in some sense. This indicates to me that there is a problem in the probe routine which should be solved. The probe routine has also problems in initialization of a DEC RRD42 CD-ROM, which sometimes works and sometimes does'nt.
