Thank you for the hint, but, as I found out, this strange problem was due to bad memory -- the box has been used in production 24h a day for the past five years. I became suspicious when even the *standard* GENERIC kernel didn't compile. As it turned out, the make process was going wrong a lot earlier than I thought, and it finally stopped at the bktr module.
