Hi Paul, I don't know if this is any help at all or not, but I initially had the same problem with 5.1. I think it was a problem with the CD, as when I burned a new one, everything worked fine. I suspect in my case, the reader is getting a little dirty and flakey, it certainly is old enough. I agree the other issues you point out (congratulations...) need to be addressed.
