Pology is a Python library by Chusslove Illich for dealing with PO files: http://pology.nedohodnik.net/ The manual is extensive: http://pology.nedohodnik.net/doc/user/en_US/ Of specific interest to us is a very clear and useful chapter on the PO file format: http://pology.nedohodnik.net/doc/user/en_US/ch-poformat.html It talks about the file format, but also about how translators can use it more effectively and avoid problems.
