we are using it successfully. you need something like this in
/etc/amd.conf:
--- cut here ---
[ /home ]
map_name =	amd.home
map_type =	nis
--- cut here ---

you will also need to change AMDHOST variable in /var/yp/Makefile
to point to your master map
