Especially if you don't want to be gratuitously unportable - NetBSD (25 Nov 1997) still uses the `#define b_cylinder b_resid' hack. You can use it for scratch or debugging in the strategy routine, at least after calling disksort(). E.g., for dumb devices like floppies and non-DMA IDE, it might be useful to keep it almost in sync with the physical residual.
