One did provide SLIP, the other only telnet (you attach a dumb ascii terminal to the serial port, you attach the terminal server to Ethernet and can telnet to anywhere). But they tend to be expensive solutions. A Pentium 100MHz with little memory and 1GB disk, and a add-on 2 serial ports card, makes a cheap solution for a 4 modem dial-up. Replicate for any number of modem you need. No investment as the P100 are available for free all around.
