I have also observed it while playing a video game (prboom). By request I played one video that exhibited problems without powerd runnin= g, and it appeared to play correctly. I shall attempt to confirm using multip= le video and audio files with and without powerd running at all, and add the results to this bug report if it is at least somewhat conclusive.
