Tried the same experiment with the laptop; didn't get the above failure, but am seeing many (as in "hundreds") of atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! atapi_poll called! with an occasional=20 t_delta 15.feae7d37eafc8830 too short or t_delta 16.045c565d970952d0 too long tossed in (maybe one of these t_delta whines for every 60 or so "atapi_poll called!" messages?). I'll interrupt the laptop & get it up & running again; the build machine is still at the DDB prompt. Each is i386 architecture; each was just upgraded this morning from r203376 to r203425.
