There're lots of things you can do on FreeBSD, but it's generally best to do the stuff you most enjoy and/or are best at. If you like writing documentation, there's the documentation project; if you like general hacking, generally hack, and if you like in-depth kernel stuff, I'm sure the kernel people will be happy for more of themselves.
