As far as I can tell, this bug report rewrites history. I wasn't involved in the project even when 2.0.5 was released, but looking at the RCS logs and at various versions of the sources, I am convinced that "ld -r" of shared objects was _never_ supported, in any version. The error message saying that it's not supported first appeared in revision 1.4 of ld.c, on 03 November 1993, and it's been there ever since. It also looks like that was the first version of the linker to support shared libraries. I don't have any plans to fix this problem. It won't hurt my feelings if somebody else wants to make a stab at it. :-) -- John
