I slowly get the impression that this is card and/or card configuration
dependent. I've had the "has to boot dos" problem till end of last year,
I beleive. Kernels newer than January this year have always initialized
my 1Meg GUS 2.4 properly. Then there was Amancio Hasty's shot at a
sound driver that supports vat. This then put my card into the doesn't work
state no matter whether I booted DOS first or not. Go figure.
