The problem is older than that:

ben@magnesium:~$ host www
www.scientia.demon.co.uk is a nickname for magnesium.scientia.demon.co.uk
magnesium.scientia.demon.co.uk has address 192.168.91.34
magnesium.scientia.demon.co.uk has address 192.168.91.34
ben@magnesium:~$ uname -rsm
FreeBSD 3.4-STABLE i386

ISTR when the problem first cropped up it was briefly mentioned, but
evidently no-one could be bothered to fix it at the time.
