The problem wasn't the Java, it was the assumption in the GIF rendering engine written in Java that after an involuntary context switch, that the current GIF rendering engine would be preferentially rescheduled before any other instance, as the rendering code itself was non-reentrant. 8-). This assumption works on Windows, Linux, and Solaris because threads are, even if they pretend otherwise, effectivel processes.
