I did the test INDEX build and here are the results:

Without patch:
make index  503.92s user 302.82s system 94% cpu 14:18.11 total

With patch:
make index  500.59s user 317.07s system 98% cpu 13:52.12 total

So as you can see there is nothing to worry about.

Yeah, it's good idea, but at first we need to clean out
portlint a little, eg to fix warnings about present .la files
etc
