named does not run by default, you need to tell it to run in
sysconfig (as you appear to have done) and then create zone files to
reflect your domain, if these files are not there then there could be
an additional delay if telnet/ftp etc are trying to use a local (not
setup) nameserver. Although I have never tried to run named without
zone files !!!
There are varions documents on the WWW regarding the correct syntax
for zone files so I won't go into that here.
If you are not running a LOCAL nameserver you just need an
/etc/resolv.conf file containing the IP address of a functioning
nameserver.
