sys/conf/newvers.sh is (or was) the best spot to look at:

revision 1.42
date: 1999/01/21 03:07:33;  author: jkh;  state: Exp;  lines: +2 -2
This is now 4.0-current

revision 1.41.2.1
date: 1999/01/21 05:33:18;  author: jkh;  state: Exp;  lines: +2 -2
Now we're -STABLE
